A book lover’s bookcase
Transforming a dark corridor into a feature of the house.
From darkness to light….
The hallway was a dark, featureless walkway. There was no reason to linger in this space. However, it was the first thing you see on entering the property and it had to be walked through to access the rest of the house.
By changing the function of the space, making it into a showcase for books, it has become both an inviting space and an uplifting feature of the property on entering the house.
LED lighting makes the space light and inviting
This area of the property has a lack of natural daylight. Adding LED lighting makes the space light and inviting, showcasing the beauty of the books, as well as making it easier to find a specific book.
The bookshelf was deliberately painted with the same paint as the walls, so that it sits back into the space. The bookcase was sealed with furniture wax to make it robust for books being stored, removed, and put back onto the shelves.
The height of each shelf was determined by the nature of the book collection.
The bookcase is built in four segments, which can be taken apart so if there is a house move in the future, the bookcase can be disassembled and moved in four pieces
